studio update: fall 2011

WORKS ON EXHIBITION

CURRENT / UPCOMING

Badlands, 2006, acrylic on canvas, 60 x 48 inches, featured in No Greater Gods
OCT 6: NO GREATER GODS  |  UVA Law Library, Charlottesville, VA
Curated by Joan Soderland and Taylor Fitchett, twelve of my paintings created between 2006 – 2010 will be included in the exhibition No Greater Gods alongside works by Rob Browning, Cynthia Kukla, Abshalom Jac Lahav, Reba Peck, and Richard Weaver. The title of the exhibition was inspired by the last line in a 1979 book of poetry Small victories by Harry R. Aldridge.

The exhibition is on view in the Library now through May 2012.

Fresh Eye, 2010, acrylic on canvas, 20 x 24 inches, featured in The Optimist

DEC 1:  THE OPTIMIST   |  East Gallery, London, UK
I am delighted that my piece Fresh Eye has been selected for inclusion in an upcoming London exhibition entitled The Optimist. Hosted by the East Gallery, the purpose of this exhibition is to raise awareness about the prevalence of HIV in the UK and to help reduce the stigma associated with living with the disease. Prints of the works in the show will be sold, with the proceeds benefiting Positive East, a London-based advocacy and charity organization.

Fresh Eye is part of a lather series of isolated figures that I did in 2009-2010 that was about the body, flesh, desire, and the need to reveal and conceal oneself.  It’s also about washing away the past, and taking measures to renew and to be seen as clean.

For the opening reception of The Optimist, which will take place on World AIDS Day, December 1, 2011, MTV will be on hand to document the exhibition and the party, and MAC Cosmetics will be recreating three of the selected pieces in body paint on live models.

Enclosure, 2010, acrylic on canvas, 46 x 36 inches, featured in Mid-Atlantic New Painting 2012

JAN 2012: MID-ATLANTIC NEW PAINTING 2012  |  Mary Washington University Gallery, Fredericksburg, VA
For the second time, my work is being included in this fantastic juried exhibition which highlights new developments in painting in the Mid-Atlantic region. The curator, Claire Huschle, is currently the executive director of the Arlington Arts Center.

Ms. Huschle chose my painting Enclosure, a lather work I completed last year along withFresh Eye (seen above).
